ENABLING PRODUCTION AT SCALE
The DRC holds trillions of dollars of untapped reserves in the ground, including strategic minerals.
DRC has between 60% and 70% of the world's reserves of cobalt and in 2017 produced 73,900 tons, compared to 123,000 tons produced worldwide in 2016.
Cobalt is primarily used in lithium-ion batteries and in the manufacture of magnetic, wear-resistant and high-strength alloys.
There are 72 economic deposits of copper/cobalt and four large mining centers in the DRC, and its copper belt includes some of the highest grade copper deposits in the world.
Copper is a traditional well-established metal often found with cobalt in the DRC, which is used in the construction and jewelry industries.
The DRC is rich in tin, but it has not been efficiently mined for over 25 years.
Tin is the metal which will build the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) in the United States have estimated that tin is the metal most likely to be positively affected by future technology.
Eastern DRC is rich in Coltan, Colombo Tantalite, of which the country produced 1,571 tons in 2017 and has 34% of the world's reserves.
